Sisters & Daughters, Part 10 – The Move to the Haunted House & the Halloween Party

October 2004 (two and a half months after part 9) - Our family moves to a “haunted house,” appropriately at Halloween. Many secrets are shared and many questions are answered. Please read the previous parts of Sisters & Daughters for the full story (so you’ll know what secrets and what questions I’m referring to). Enjoy!

“Friday, October 29. Halloween weekend, and the Big Move.” Diane read the words on the calendar hanging by the kitchen closet that had served as the family’s pantry for the last nine years and six months. And she had lived in this house by herself for almost six years before her sister and nieces had moved in. So much had changed since then. Most of it for the better. She looked around at the empty kitchen. No kitchen table. No appliances on the counter. No refrigerator. No stove. And she knew every dish was out of the cupboards, and packed up in cardboard boxes.

Her sister Evelyn tapped her on the shoulder. “Com’on Di. It’s time to move on. The moving van is full. The dishes and breakables are in the cars. Tonya and Laura might not mind hanging with us all night, but I’m sure Carolyn and Samantha would like to go home some time today.”

Diane sighed. “I know. Let’s go.” The sisters walked out the front door, Diane pausing to lock it, and got in their respective cars. Their sister-in-law, Luann was in the driver’s seat of the moving van waiting to follow Diane, and with their friends Carolyn and Samantha driving their own cars, the family had gotten everything packed in the vehicles in under three hours. Evelyn would stop at the Burger Hut drive through to pick up supper for everyone, then they would unload the furniture from the van at the new house, so Luann and Diane could take the van back the next morning.

The new house was only a few minutes drive outside of town. Luann backed the moving van up to the garage, parked it, got out and unlocked the van door while Diane unlocked the garage door.

They set up the kitchen table in the breakfast nook, and pulled out chairs first, so everyone could eat by the time Evelyn came back with the food. All the women and girls were dressed in jeans and tee shirts with sneakers, except for Sam, who wore work boots, cut off jean shorts, and a white tank top. In addition to Tammy’s friend, Tonya, and Nicky’s friend Laura, Samantha’s daughter Demi, and Carolyn’s daughter Angelica were also there to help. That made five adults and seven kids. Twelve movers made quick work.

Half sat at the table, half stood at the counter to eat, when Evelyn showed up with the food. Diane set out the plan. “We just need to get everything out of the van.
